♪ Pope Leo XIV urged thousands of people in Uruguay to build bridges of fraternity and faith. He did so during his first Mass in South America, where he took the opportunity to dedicate an ode to the mate and to strengthen the presence of the Catholic church in the most secular country in the area.
Less than a month after being operated by lung cancer, León XIV begins one of the most challenging pastoral visits for a Pontiff, a 12-day tour that will also take him to Argentina and Peru, his second home. The Pope is expected to meet with Uruguayan President Yamandu Orsi on 6 November, before visiting the Metropolitan Cathedral of Montevideo.
The Pontiff begins his first apostolic journey to the region in Uruguay, where the decline of believers and a strong secular tradition pose special challenges.
